Mystery Rosy Sludge on Secluded Tasmanian Beach Spurs Fears of Potential Algae Outbreak
Agencies in the island state are attempting to pinpoint a pink slime that has surfaced on a secluded beach, with some scientists worried it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.
Broad Appearance Across Coastline
The magenta-hued slime was found on a section of a southern bay about 60 kilometers south of the capital. A comparable ooze has also been recorded on parts of a nearby shore and a separate bay.

Examples have been collected and sent to the Environment Protection Authority for analysis. A representative remarked that "algae outbreaks are a normal phenomenon in reaction to changes in minerals, temperature, rainfall or sunlight".
"They are sometimes called red or pink tides because the blooms can change the water crimson," the official added. "Few algal blooms are toxic, with several kinds serving as a primary source of energy for creatures in the aquatic ecosystem."

A marine scientist, who collected samples of the magenta ooze in the state, stated it appeared the suspected bloom had "increased notably" and indicated the aquaculture sector was the most likely culprit, citing similar cases overseas.
"Thus Tasmania needs to send a firm alert here, the government and the EPA need to react to this. We need to analyse the examples we've gathered and we need to put word out the people here," she said.
The scientist stated she had concerns for people's well-being after noticing a numbness along her arms and face while being splashed with contaminated seawater.

An conservation group has stated lifeless animals and deceased marine life being found on the beach, with a veteran activist calling the circumstances as an "environmental emergency" and calling on the local leader to inspect and "take control the effort that officials must be undertaking".
